The skill of obtaining informed consent from patients is an essential element of contemporary approach in medicine - patient centred care. By practising this skill students significantly increase the odds of empowering patients in their decision making and taking care of their own health by sharing the responsibility, providing information and choice. Giving time, showing competence by provision of necessary information, showing empathy, having good communication skills and understanding the need for a patient to be an equal partner in their health decisions are core elements of the skill of obtaining informed consent.
