Skill description | Student is able to assess apical pulse by palpation. Pulse diagnostics determines the overall state of the response to imbalances of the cardiovascular and other systems. For this skill, the student should have knowledge of physiology and normal measurement intervals about the circulatory system. | ||

Description | Student is able to assess apical pulse on real person (peer student) using using a stethoscope. |

Performance steps | Hands are washed. The individual is informed about the procedure. If the individual has been involved in any activity, he is allowed to rest for 5-10 minutes. It is ensured that the individual takes a sitting or supine position. By paying attention to the privacy of the individual, the sternum and the left area of the chest are exposed and their clothes are opened.
The apex of the heart is detected. stethoscope is used and controlled. An imaginary line is drawn down the midline of the left clavicle (midclavicular line). The 5th intercostal space is determined to the left of the sternum. The intersection of the midclavicular line and the 5th intercostal space is determined (apex of the heart). The diaphragm of the stethoscope is placed at the apex of the heart (the point you have determined) and the heartbeats are listened. Heartbeats heard during one minute are counted. While resting heartbeats, rhythm and volume are evaluated. While counting the apical pulse, the pulse is also checked from the radial artery. It is checked whether there is a numerical difference between them. At the end of the procedure, the individual is helped to put on his clothes. It is ensured that the individual takes a comfortable position. The individual is informed about the value found. The earpieces and diaphragm of the stethoscope are cleaned with disinfectant gauze. The appropriate forms of assessment are recorded. Hands are washed. |
Learning results | At the end of this practice course, the student knows how to measure and evaluate apical pulse (manual) using a stethoscope. |
