Description | Student is able to preform manual measurements of peripheral pulse on real person (peer student) using seconds wrist watch. Pulse diagnostics determines the overall state of the response to imbalances of the cardiovascular and other systems. For this skill, the student should have knowledge of physiology and normal measurement intervals about the circulatory system. |

Performance steps | 1. Necessary materials are prepared 2. Hand hygiene is provided 3. The patient's identity is confirmed 4. The procedure is explained to the patient and the patient's helpfulness is evaluated. 5. The patient is reminded not to speak, as the measured value may be affected during the procedure. 6. The peripheral area to be evaluated is selected (in this application, the radial artery is selected) 7. The patient's clothes are stripped so that the selected area is exposed. 8. The patient is placed in a suitable position (the wrist to which the patient's pulse will be evaluated is placed diagonally on the chest) 9. The index, middle and ring fingers are placed on the radial artery. 10. The artery is pressed lightly so that the pulse can be felt and counted. 11. The beats are counted for one minute after the pulse is clearly felt. 12. If the beats are rhythmic and full, the pulse can be evaluated for 30 seconds and multiplied by 2. 13. If there is an irregular heartbeat or if the patient is encountered for the first time, the measurement is 1 min. done throughout. 14. During the evaluation, the rhythm and fullness of the pulse are also evaluated. 15. The patient is informed about the measured values. 16. The measured value is recorded in the nurse observation form. 17. Hand hygiene is provided. |
Learning results | At the end of this practice course, the student knows how to measure and evaluate peripheral pulse (manual) using a second wrist watch. |
