Check protocols for procedure if available

Review clinicians orders for oxygen therapy for specific patient and read patients medical record (medical history)

Follow standard procedure:

Patient in a semi uppright or uppright position

asses vital signs and document them (asses level of pain and anxiety)

check that the room is safe for oxygen administration (frisk of ignition)

Attach flow meter to the oxygen source

Set the flow rate that is prescribed for patient

Check oxygen flow from prongs

Place prongs/tubes in patients nostrils. (long term use risk for decubitus) and secure them behind ears and under chin

Turn on alarms on oxygen saturation monitor (if in use) and set parameters

asses vital signs and behavior regularly to asses the effect of oxygen therapy
